Plastic is een overkoepelende term voor kunststof materialen die we maken uit grondstoffen als aardolie, aardgas en planten. Plastic bestaat uit polymeren, lange moleculen die bestaan uit steeds dezelfde bouwstenen.

Plastics zijn zogenoemde kunstmatige polymeren. De grondstof van de meeste plastics is aardolie. Met tien kilo aardolie heb je al voldoende voor het maken van zo’n drieduizend Albert Heijn-tasjes. Van ongeveer tien procent van de olie maken we plastic, de rest zetten we om in bijvoorbeeld benzine of stookolie.
