Spirillen (ook wel spiraalbacteriën) zijn gramnegatieve, gebogen staafvormige bacteriën die meestal zweepdraden (mono- of bipolair) bezitten. Ze komen voor in afval en water dat rijk is aan waterstofsulfide.

Er zijn twee soorten spirillen / spirocheten / spiraalbacteriën die notoire ziekteverwekkers zijn : Borrelia burgdorferi, dat de ziekte van Lyme kan veroorzaken en Treponema pallidum, de veroorzaker van syfillis. (Zijn veel meer soorten natuurlijk, maar dit zijn mooie “bekende voorbeelden”. )
