Het onderscheid tussen echt leer en nepleer kan je zien door het leer te plooien. Als de poriën verdwijnen als je het leder dubbelvouwt, dan heb je nepleer (of eventueel splitleer) in je handen. Bij echt leer blijven die poriën zichtbaar.
