De magische Helleborus behoort net als de boterbloem tot de familie van de Ranunculaceae. De naam Helleborus is afgeleid van elleborum, wat geluk of genezing betekent. Uit de (giftige) wortel werden vroeger geneeskrachtige zalfjes bereid. De witte Helleborus wordt ook wel kerstroos genoemd.
